Madeira is known for its mild and (mostly) steady year-round climate. Average temperatures range from 66°F-79°F (19°C-26°C), making it a top tier destination all year round.
However, with a calendar full of festivals, outdoor activities, and seasonal events, and not to mention peak tourist seasons, when is truly the best time to visit Madeira? Let’s break it down.
Madeira is known for its variety of produce, specifically fruits. There are several festivals throughout the year celebrating this.

Madeira Flower Festival takes place in May when flowers fill the streets of Funchal and other villages on the island. You will enjoy stunning parades and a vibrant atmosphere.

The best time to hike in Madeira is during the spring or autumn months. These months provide gorgeous weather and fewer crowds.

Madeira has some of the best opportunities to watch marine life in the world. The best time to go whale watching in Madeira is between April and October. The very best time is over the summer.

The winter months are the best time to surf in Madeira with the largest swells coming in around November to February. Make sure to check out Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar, two famous surfing villages on the island.

Carnival (Late Feb- Early March, after Ash Wednesday)
Highlights: Parades, samba dancers, and elaborate costumes. The main parade in Funchal features local troupes dancing through the streets, creating a festive atmosphere.
Festa da Anona | Cherimoya Festival (March)
Highlights: Celebrated in Faial, this festival celebrates the local cherimoya fruit. Visitors can enjoy various products derived from the fruit, including liqueurs, puddings, ice creams, and shakes (um…YUM!)
Flower Festival | Festa da Flor (May)
Highlights: This event shines the spotlight on Madeira's rich flora with vibrant floral carpets, parades, and decorations throughout Funchal. The main parade features themed floats adorned with flowers, celebrating the island's natural beauty.
Atlantic Festival | Festival do Atlântico (June)
Highlights: Music, fireworks, and cultural performances, this festival includes the Madeira Music Festival and an International Fireworks Competition, where different countries present pyrotechnic shows synchronized with music.
Madeira Wine Rally | Rali Vinho Madeira (Late July or early August)
Highlights: Part of the national rally championship, this event attracts regional, national, and international drivers, offering thrilling motorsport action against the backdrop of Madeira's scenic landscapes.
Wine Festival | Festa do Vinho (September)
Highlights: Celebrated along Avenida Arriaga in Funchal, this festival celebrates Madeira's wine-making tradition with tastings, parades, and cultural events, allowing visitors to enjoy the island's vinicultural heritage.
