When I lived in Leeds, I visited York several times as it was just a short train ride away and absolutely fell in love with this ✨magical✨ city.

How to Get to York, England
Train
In my opinion, the easiest way to visit York is by train. The train station is located just a short distance from city centre and all the main York attractions. The city is very walkable and it is easy to get from one end of the city to the other in under 20 minutes.
I always book my tickets through Trainline because it simplifies my planning, and I consistently find the best deals there. Make sure to check it out!
Bus
Depending on where you are coming from, York is well connected via bus routes. Both National Express and Flix Bus have routes to York from many other cities in the UK. Check out their websites to plan your trip.
Car
I recommend taking public transport when visiting York as parking fees in the city can be quite a heavy bill. However, if you plan on driving, there is a parking garage near Sainsbury’s (Foss Bank, York YO31 7JB, United Kingdom) that is a great location to park and walk straight into city centre.
Airports
The closest airports to York are the Leeds and Manchester airports. Manchester Airport even has a direct train service from the airport to York city centre.

How Many Days Do You Need in York?
Many travelers are happy with 2-4 days in York. Although there are many things to do in York, it is not a very big city. You can thoroughly enjoy all there is to do with just a couple of days.

Things to do in York, England
1. York Minster
York Minster is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the UK. Everytime I visit York, the facade still takes my breath away.
This is one of the best places to truly understand how deep the history of York goes. On the Minster’s website, you will notice the timeline goes all the way back to the year 306…I promise, you did not read that wrong and there is no typo. 306 AD.
Here, you will find the site of people’s lives and stories that go back thousands of years. Not to mention the beautiful architecture and decor.

2. The Shambles
If you are a Harry Potter fan, The Shambles is one place you absolutely won’t want to miss. This narrow, cobblestoned lane is lined with quaint shops and restaurants.
The Shop That Must Not Be Named is a dream destination for Harry Potter fans. Beyond offering officially licensed merchandise, it transforms your visit into an unforgettable experience. The moment you step inside, you’ll feel like you've been transported straight into the wizarding world of Harry Potter.
3. York Museum Gardens
The York Museum Garden is one of my favorite places in York and somewhere I will always recommend to anyone visiting.
Within the garden, you will find the ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey, a church that dates back to the 11th century. This is a popular spot for picnics on a warm, sunny day.
4. York Art Gallery
For those of you who love art and culture, the York Art Gallery is a beautiful building housing gorgeous artworks and interactive stations throughout the exhibits.
5. York City Walls
York’s medieval walls, once acting as the defense against intruders still weave through the city, offering visitors a unique way to get to know York. The circular route is free all year round and closes each day at dusk.
It isn’t everyday you get to walk along 2000 year old walls. A trip to York isn’t complete without walking the York City Walls.
