Cluj-Napoca, often referred to as the heart of Transylvania, is a vibrant European destination that, in my opinion, isn’t talked about enough.
I had the opportunity to visit the beautiful city of Cluj while the city was hosting the annual Cluj Street Food Festival. To my fellow foodies- yes, it is just as amazing as you are imagining.
Outside of the Cluj Street Food Festival, Cluj has a booming culinary scene. With funky and innovative gastropubs, bistros, and cafes across the city, my time in Cluj was beyond enjoyable.

The Street Food Festival in Cluj-Napoca typically takes place in early summer, transforming the city into a foodie paradise.
The event spans several days, usually held in the centrally located Central Park but we discovered there were many pockets across the city with food vendors and entertainment including the Iulius Mall.
The Cluj Street Food Festival features a diverse array of food trucks and stalls offering everything from traditional Romanian dishes to international cuisine.
The festival featured food vendors with a variety of specialties, relaxing seating areas, and fun entertainment.
What to Expect at the Cluj Street Food Festival
Food Variety: The Cluj Street Food Festival boasts an impressive variety of food options. You can indulge in Romanian specialties like sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls) and mici (grilled sausages), as well as international flavors such as Asian street food and American-style burgers.
Don’t forget to try the fusion options as well. I had a Romanian-style Beef Burger at one of the stalls that was devoured in seconds.
Beverages: In addition to food, the festival features a beer garden with a variety of local treasures, including craft beers and local wines.
Entertainment: Live music, DJ sets, and cultural performances create a festive atmosphere.
Family-Friendly Activities: The festival is family-friendly, with designated areas and activities for children, including face painting, games, and cooking classes for kids.
Artisan Booths: Along with street food and drink, the Central Park is lined with booths containing talented local artists, craftsman, and farmers selling produce and product.
Tips for Enjoying the Cluj Street Food Festival
Bring Cash: Many vendors accept cards but it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand just in case.
Wear Comfortable Clothing: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, standing, and of course EATING, so dress comfortably.
Stay Hydrated: With so much food and fun, don’t forget to drink plenty of water.
Try Something New: The festival is a great opportunity to sample new foods. Be adventurous!
The Kurtos Kalacs (Chimney Cake) is a traditional pastry. This one had a light orange or citrus flavor. It was DELISH.

Exploring Cluj-Napoca
While you’re in town for the festival, take some time to explore Cluj-Napoca’s other attractions:
Old Town: Wander through the charming streets of the Old Town and relax at the Piața Unirii (the Union Square)
While I was in Cluj there were many concerts and events that took place at the square. There are several cafes and bistros that line the square, making it a great place to enjoy the lively nightlife or a peaceful afternoon.
Botanical Garden: A beautiful place to unwind and enjoy nature.
Salina Turda: A 40 minute drive outside of Cluj will land you at Salida Turda, an underground salt mine with a twist. When you travel down through the chambers of the mine, you’ll reach the final chamber and find a full ferris wheel and entertainment hub!
Rimetea: While you are venturing outside of the city, I highly recommend a quick stop in Rimetea, a traditional Hungarian village with amazing views.
Since this is a food blog, it would be unfair of me not to mention the amazing place we stopped for lunch while visiting Rimetea. Check out Conacul Secuiesc-Székelykő Kúria, a hotel and restaurant nestled right below the mountain range, giving you a breathtaking view while you enjoy your traditional Romanian and Hungarian meal.
